The right marketing support depends on the work you need done and how that work will be managed. Business size alone does not tell you whether to hire an employee, engage an agency, or work with a consultant and execution team.

Separate direction from production

List the decisions that need ownership: priorities, audience, offer, budget, measurement, and tradeoffs between activities. Then list the execution: campaigns, website changes, creative, reporting, product feeds, or offline materials.

A business can have plenty of production capacity and still lack clear direction. It can also have a sensible plan but nobody with time to execute it. Those are different gaps and should not produce the same hiring brief.

When an in-house role makes sense

An employee may fit when there is a durable workload, enough context to justify daily involvement, and the management capacity to support the role. Define the responsibilities realistically. One job description covering advanced design, development, paid media, content, analytics, events, and strategy can hide the need for several kinds of expertise.

An in-house owner may still use outside specialists. The important question is whether the person has the time and authority to coordinate the work, evaluate recommendations, and keep priorities clear.

When outside support makes sense

Outside support can fit a defined project, a specialist gap, or ongoing work that does not justify every capability being employed internally. Ask who sets direction, who executes, and who is accountable for decisions. Labels such as “consultant” or “agency” do not answer those questions on their own.

A focused website project may need a very different arrangement from coordinating several campaigns and offline activities. The scope should reflect that difference without making assumptions about what a company should spend based on its size.

Compare the actual working arrangement

Ask how priorities are agreed, what deliverables are included, what information the provider needs, and how progress will be reviewed. Clarify the total cost, including advertising spend, software, production, or setup where relevant. Do not compare a service fee with an employee salary as though either number includes every cost.

Also ask what happens when a recommendation crosses disciplines. If the campaign needs a landing-page change or better sales feedback, who makes that connection and gets the work moving?

Choose a sensible starting scope

At WECHSELER, clients work directly with Julien on strategy, with the WECHSELER team coordinating hands-on execution around agreed priorities. That arrangement should be judged on its fit for the work, not on a promise to do everything.

Review where we can help and our engagement approach before deciding what kind of support your business needs next.
